Pesto is one of my favorite Italian flavors, I could literally drink it! Unfortunately most restaurant or store bought pesto includes dairy, oil, and excess sodium which would mean compromising my health and my beliefs. I love to eat well without having to choose between yummy food and eating in the best interest of my body. That’s why I’m so excited to share this recipe because it is versatile, easy, healthy, and delicious!

We all know washing our hands is an important part of good hygiene and helps us avoid harmful bacteria. But, what we put on our skin is readily absorbed into our bloodstream and most of don’t stop to think about the ingredients in our hand soap. For example, Triclosan and Triclocarban were active ingredients in most antibacterial soaps until very recently because they are known to kill bacteria. Triclosan has been part of numerous studies proving it has potential to kill human cells, alter hormone regulation, contribute to the development of antibiotic-resistant “super germs,” and cause harm to the immune system. A large 2008 study designed to assess exposure to triclosan in a sample of U.S. children and adults, found triclosan in the urine of nearly 75 percent of those tested.

But first thing's first, what the heck is gluten? To put it simply, gluten is the term for the glue-like proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye that hold the grain together. Modern wheat comes from a hybrid plant that has been modified by food scientists in labs to increase productivity. It is sprayed heavily with pesticides and is far less nutritious than the original form of wheat our great grandparents were eating.

Anyone that has never heard of oil cleansing would probably say slathering oil on your face sounds counterproductive. I’ll admit, before putting in hours of research about the OCM (oil cleansing method) and actually trying it for myself, I was skeptical to say the least. Here’s a little background on what led me to the OCM. I’ve always had sensitive and acne prone combination skin, which means I’m both oily and dry and break out super easily. Fun stuff! I saw a dermatologist regularly for years without success. I was prescribed topical creams, ointments, and a few different pills that did nothing more than make me feel nauseous and turn into a flaky reptilian with even more sensitive skin.

Whether you’re trying to eat raw, gluten-free, paleo, vegan, or just healthier in general, collard wraps are an amazing staple to add to your diet. They’re great to pack for lunch as a sandwich/burrito replacement because they don't get soggy the way bread and tortillas do. Collard wraps are filling and nutritious, but also super light and don’t make you feel like collapsing into a food coma forever after you eat them.
As consumers, many of us blindly trust the companies we buy from to have our best interest in mind. But, the scary truth is, the ultimate goal of making a profit tends to compromise the integrity of most companies. Large corporations are usually focused on their bottom line, which means cost efficient mass production, and everlasting shelf life often take precedence over long-term health and safety risks to their consumers. It is especially difficult to make the distinction between toxic and non-toxic products with the plethora of labels that say things like “all natural, paraben free, organic, vegan etc.”
