Anyone that has never heard of oil cleansing would probably say slathering oil on your face sounds counterproductive. I’ll admit, before putting in hours of research about the OCM (oil cleansing method) and actually trying it for myself, I was skeptical to say the least. Here’s a little background on what led me to the OCM. I’ve always had sensitive and acne prone combination skin, which means I’m both oily and dry and break out super easily. Fun stuff! I saw a dermatologist regularly for years without success. I was prescribed topical creams, ointments, and a few different pills that did nothing more than make me feel nauseous and turn into a flaky reptilian with even more sensitive skin.
I tried countless over the counter face washes targeting acne and still, nothing was effective. Becoming vegan prompted me to think more about what I was putting into my body, which lead to becoming more conscious about what I was putting ON my body as well. Our skin is our biggest organ after all, and it is highly absorbent. After TONS of research, I realized two things that are so simple and obvious but never really occurred to me. Number one: skin issues are a direct reflection of what’s going on inside our body. If we are unhealthy, hormonally unbalanced, dehydrated, or deficient in essential vitamins and minerals, how can we expect our skin to be healthy and glowing? Number two: I was putting my skin through WAY TOO MUCH. All the medications, high end foaming face washes, creams, gels, masks etc. were filled with harmful chemicals, parabens, alcohols, and surfactants that were stripping my skin of its natural moisture and destroying my acid mantle (thin, slightly acidic film on the surface of the skin acting as a protective barrier). When skin is stripped of its natural oils, it goes into overdrive and produces excess oil, which causes clogged pores, blackheads, milia, and acne. What I really needed to do was keep it MINIMAL and natural.
Oil cleansing is not only for acne prone skin, but is beneficial for ALL skin types because it is gentle, soothing, and effective. We at The Minimal Dose are so excited to be sharing this method with everyone because it’s simple, natural, and it REALLY works.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Here’s a description of the OCM quoted directly from https://www.acne.org:
Fact: Oil dissolves oil. One of the most basic principles of chemistry is that “like dissolves like.” The best way to dissolve a non-polar solvent like sebum/oil, is by using another non-polar solvent similar in composition: Other oils. By using the right oils, you can cleanse your pores of dirt and bacteria naturally, gently and effectively, while replacing the dirty oil with beneficial ones extracted from natural botanicals, vegetables and fruit that heal, protect and nourish your skin. When done properly and consistently, the OCM can clear the skin from issues like oily skin, dry skin, sensitive skin, blackheads, whiteheads and other problems caused by mild to moderate acne–while leaving your skin healthy, balanced and properly moisturized.
HOW TO CLEANSE WITH OIL:
That’s it, you’re done! If you’re feeling a little dry, use a natural moisturizer like our DAILY DOSE or simply massage a few drops of Cleansing Oil like our CONSCIOUS CLEANSE into your skin for extra hydration..
THE CONSCIOUS CLEANSE (Our signature oil cleanser):
We at The Minimal Dose have fallen so in love with the OCM, we wanted to create an oil cleanser made from 100% pure organic, cold-pressed, and unrefined oils that would be great for all skin types and would not clog pores. We keep it simple using Sunflower Oil, Babassu, Manuka oil, and soothing essential oil blends. Sunflower Oil and Babassu both have a comedogenic rating of 0 out of 5, which means they are non pore clogging. They are full of essential vitamins and minerals that nourish and protect your skin from free radicals, while slowing signs of aging. Manuka oil has all the same benefits as Manuka honey, but leaves the bees out of it and is harvested straight from the trees. Manuka oil is anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and 30x more powerful than tea tree oil. It is important to remember the oil cleansing method is most effective when using beneficial plant derived oils that have not been refined, heat-processed, or stripped of their natural benefits. The Conscious Cleanse is my HOLY GRAIL cleanser.

Olive Oil- nourishing and beneficial for most skin types. Comedogenic Rating- 2.
Coconut Oil- Not the best oil for the face, because it is highly comedogenic, but may work for some mature skin types. Comedogenic rating- 4
Avocado Oil- Beneficial for mature skin. Comedogenic rating- 2.
Grape Seed Oil: A dryer oil. Works well for those with acne and oily skin. Comedogenic Rating-1
Apricot Kernal Seed Oil- Beneficial for dry and mature skin. Comedogenic Rating- 2.
Hazelnut Oil- A good alternative to castor oil for those with oily skin. Comedogenic Rating- 0.
NOTE: If you start oil cleansing with noncomedogenic oils and find yourself breaking out during the first week or so, this is completely normal. Oil cleansing pulls dirt, impurities, and toxins to the surface and can cause your skin cycle to speed up. This means, all those breakouts that were building up are going to be forced to the surface and purged from your skin. Give it a week or two and you will start seeing results!
